**Grandmother Warned by Police After Grabbing Grandchild Running onto Road South Auckland. This grandmother had to prevent her 2 year old grandson from running onto the road by grabbing his arm and pulling him back to the footpath. She was petrified that her grandson could be run over. A police officer witnessed her and said she was breaking the law by grabbing him. She was let off with a warning but was told that if it ever happened again, they would prosecute her. She had recently lost a friend’s child (6) to a train crash. (Takanini) She now puts him in the pram to avoid getting arrested. Her family is horrified by what's happened and she's now concerned about taking her grandchildren out in public. She feels she's been publicly humiliated. Another grandmother came up to her and said she'd been interviewed by the police for giving her 4 year old grandson a smack on the bottom in Countdown for swearing at her. ** Passerby Reports Squealing Child Auckland. Tanya had two police officers arrive on her doorstep as she was hosting visitors on a Saturday night. The police informed her that a ‘passer by’ had heard a child being smacked and subsequently screaming. They could not tell the mum what day this occurred on, what time or who the person was. She explained to them that her 9 year old daughter squeals when she plays, particularly when outside on the trampoline with her brother. She likes to play hard with her 13 year old brother – and inevitably she sometimes gets hurts – and performs! The mum says the passer-by could have heard her children 'playing' – “do I have to stop them having fun??” “We don't smack our kids (or if we have in the past, it has been minor) and this incident did not occur. I informed the officers accordingly. They insisted that they needed to see my daughter. I informed them that she was now with her father as we share custody. I gave them full contact details. They told me they would have to go around there to check she was OK.” “I have found the whole episode to be extremely distressing. I felt completely humiliated to literally be accused of child abuse and have now found it hard to sleep at night at it has upset me so much - how I look after and care for my children is being questioned. On hearsay I am now a guilty person. This new law is ending up with a lot of good innocent parents being wrongfully accused. ** Eight year old’s Class Taught to Dob in Parents – Behaviour Deteriorates
Hawkes Bay. The police went to a local primary school and did a session on “Keeping Ourselves Safe.” During the session, the policeman told this particular class of 7 and 8 year olds that parents couldn’t smack them, and that if they did, they should immediately tell the teacher. This was not the only school in the area where this message was given. Within the next few days, this solo mum’s 8 year old daughter who had been in this session and who had had a ‘clean’ record at school all year was stood down for kicking the teacher in the leg. She also kept telling her mother “you can’t make me do anything - you can’t smack me”, following the lesson. Her older child (10) also told the mother that “you can’t make me go to school.”
The mother went to the police to clarify what they had said and to tell them the difficulties she'd had since their visit to the school. The Sergeant was obliging and said he would sort it out by sending the officer involved to speak to the girls and reinstate her authority. An angry phone call from the officer followed to the mother, questioning whether she had a problem with the smacking law. Two days later 2 male officers arrived to supposedly reinstate the mother’s authority but instead they questioned her parenting skills and told her they had investigated her background with a variety of community organisations. They had her in tears and she found them intimidating and degrading. They also proceeded to tell the children their rights. Yet amazingly the police said to the mother the daughter deserved a smack after kicking the teacher. The mother in desperation at her treatment spoke to her local MP, & was then contacted by the District Commander of the Police who told her not to go complaining to the MP because he had better things to do. **Mother Investigated After 4 Year Old Smacked For Running Out on Road West Auckland Jackie’s 4 year old ran across the road outside a busy supermarket when she saw a friend on other side of road. The mum smacked her on the bottom once to show her how dangerous her actions were. A member of the public challenged the way she had disciplined her child, took her vehicle registration, and the mum was visited by police two days later. She felt like a criminal and embarrassed by it all. She said “please don’t take my daughter” to the police. They did a police check to see if it had happened before. Hi everyone,

Just a quick update for the team in Christchurch. (Auckland & Otago people, I'm forwarding this on to you also to keep you in the loop :)

We had a motivating meeting with Larry and Barbara Baldock on Monday night where we discussed plans for serving our community by gathering signatures for the referendum in Christchurch.

We were reminded that there are thousands of people out there who want to sign, it's just up to us to go out there and put the petition in front of them so they can sign it.

We're at 236,100 signatures currently (See the "signature thermometer" on the Unity for Liberty website for the most recent count).

This Saturday - come on guys, lets hit Christchurch with at least three tables. Lets go from about 9:30am til 2:30pm, with people most welcome to stay later if they like, but the best time is around the lunch-hour, when the city really gets bustling. I've got 3 tables, plenty of signs, plenty of petition boards and pens. We just need you guys now, so get back to me asap, as I need to book a couple of spots with the City Council.

Let's get Saturday out of the way, and then we can plan for getting tables at the big events coming up in January and February.

Come on Canterbury, Let's blow Auckland out of the water with our signature count for this Saturday! Auckland guys, the pressure is on!!!

This is to invite you to stand up and be counted.

ACT member John Boscawen is organising marches in Auckland and Wellington to protest the Labour led Government's attack on democracy.

The Electoral Finance Bill is designed to curb political activity.

Labour and NZ First with help from the Greens and United Future are about to ram through a law to gag free speech.

This despite vociferous objection from the Human Rights Commission, the Law Society, Grey Power and concerned citizens from every sector of New Zealand society.

The plan is to give Labour freedom to say what it likes in election year and gag everyone else.

Once the Gagging Bill goes through - possibly as soon as next week - it will be against the law for me to send an email such as this.

That's why the Human Rights Commission talks about a "chilling" impact on democracy.

That's why this is a Gagging Bill by any other name and must be stopped.

15th September 2007 - Campaign in Rodney

Arna Mountain has weaved some magic and is now setting the pace and it's all happening again on Sat 15th Sept. Here's her report from Rodney's Campaign

On Saturday 1 September from 9-12.00 noon a group of about 30 supporters from Unity for Liberty and Voice Rodney went out on the streets in Orewa, Whangaparaoa, Silverdale and Warkworth. With their placards and enthusiasm they asked people to sign petitions pushing for the two referendums. The group split and went to 4 different locations. Sports playing fields in Stanmore Bay,and outside The Plaza, Silverdale, and the Orewa shopping centre. There was also a group in the Warkworth Shopping area.

Although a little disappointed that so few people turned up we were very encouraged that 1174 signatures were collected in 3 hours.
People stopped their cars when they saw the placards and hopped out to sign the petitions. At times we had a number of people wanting to sign at the same time and they would wait till one the clip boards were free. Some shop assistants came over from the local supermarket to see what we were doing during their breaks. It was obviously a topic of conversation.

I think we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg of discontent. There are 1000's out there who want to sign these petitions. They no longer want the government to intrude into their family life. They have gone too far!

We were fortunate that two reporters from local papers stopped and wanted photos and details of what we were doing.

I encourage others to start campaigns in their areas. It may seem formidable but 83% of the nation will be behind this and will support you, as many of us are finding out.

We are having another campaign in Rodney on Sat 15 September 9-12 noon. Please join us this time and make a difference. It is not hard to get signatures. Meet again at 8:40am at Gateway Church Carpark, Red Beach Rd.

Why: To publicly voice our frustration at the Government's arrogant disdain of the ordinary New Zealander evidenced in the passing of the Crimes (Abolition of Force as a Justification for Child Discipline) Amendment Bill. Also, to raise public awareness of Larry Baldock’s petition for a Citizens Initiated Referendum and to collect signatures for the petition.
What: We will be focussing on raising the awareness of the public to the anti-parental-authority law. This will involve the volunteers taking a placard and standing on the footpath in the Riccarton Mall area. Others will be holding clipboards, gathering signatures for Larry Baldock's petition http://www.FamilyIntegrity.org.nz. And others will be looking after the trestle tables (we hope to have two at least).

Following several successful Feet on Footpaths campaigns in the North Island, Unity for Liberty is launching it's first public awareness campaign in Christchurch on 1 September 07.

Groups such as Family First NZ and political party Future New Zealand have expressed support for Unity for Liberty's efforts to collect the required 300,000 signatures.

If you are a concerned New Zealander who is concerned about your rights as a parent regarding discipline, and for future generations in New Zealand, then please get in contact with Andy (contact details below), and come along to the Feet on Footpaths campaign on 1 September. · Make time on Saturday 1th September to join other concerned citizens on the street. We are calling for volunteers to be pedestrians, walking or standing on the footpaths of the selected campaign area (Riccarton Mall area). You will carry petition forms and small placards bearing a message that is focused on the issue.
· We aim to be in the Riccarton mall area from 9:30am til 11:30am. The area will be divided into sections and within each area we will suggest strategic places to stand for optimum coverage. Volunteers have the option to meet those working in their section at approximately 9am, before starting. (Upon registering for this event, we will inform you of your area.) In this way, families, youth groups, churches and interest groups can work together in the same geographical area. It is suggested that teenagers/youth groups work in teams, standing in pairs, and even rotating jobs over the course of the morning.
· Depending upon enthusiasm and time, volunteers may use other means to heighten the awareness of the petition and gain signatures. This may involve door knocking for signatures, parking your car (nearby) with signs on the window, or any other appropriate options. It’s all up to you!
· Unity For Liberty hopes that as local residents go about their daily business, they will be confronted by a succession of clear messages and pleasant people. The impact of this event should be the talking point for at least 80% of all the homes in the area. For example- 300 people spaced at 1 km apart. The campaign will cover 300 kms over the Riccarton area.
· In order to coordinate a successful campaign in this area, we will need an indication of numbers. If you intend to join in this event, please let us know so we can allocate people to different areas. We intend to overload areas so no one will be isolated. Group registrations are accepted and members will be placed together throughout the morning.
· All activity involving Unity For Liberty is of a peaceful nature; any illegal or irresponsible actions will not be tolerated.

· In any case of confrontation, remember you are a pedestrian “walk away”.
· If people do not wish to sign the top petition, you can encourage them to sign the bottom petition - “we oppose child abuse and sign the 2nd question”.
· Do not be an obstruction to the general public.
· Do not enter commercial business areas. There are by-laws in place that would be infringed.

The CIR contains two questions for Referendum at the 2008 election. The first one reads:

Should a smack as a part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?

The second question reads:

Should the government give urgent priority to understanding and addressing the wider causes of family breakdown, family violence and child abuse in New Zealand?

We are not asking you to answer yes or no to the petition questions. We are asking if you think that every New Zealander should have the opportunity to say yes or no to these questions in a referendum at the 2008 election. For this to happen, we have to collect 300,000 signatures on these petitions.

A Referendum is where all New Zealand voters are required to say yes or no to a question, so in this case, at the 2008 election, Kiwis will be asked both of the above questions.

A Citizens Initiated Referendum is where all New Zealand voters are required to answer yes or no to a question(s), in this case, at the 2008 election, voters will be asked two questions.
The first one reads:

The second question reads:

Should the government give urgent priority to understanding and addressing the wider causes of family breakdown, family violence and child abuse in New Zealand?

At this stage we are not asking people to answer yes or no to the referendum questions. We are asking if they think that every New Zealander should have the opportunity to say yes or no to the questions in a referendum at the 2008 election.

Make time on Saturday 11th Aug to join other concerned citizens on the street. We are calling for volunteers to be pedestrians, walking or standing on the footpaths of the selected campaign area (Howick/Pakuranga). You will carry petition forms and small placards bearing a message that is focused on the issue.


We aim to be in the Howick/Pakuranga area from 9am to 12noon. The area will be divided into sections and within each area we will suggest strategic places to stand for optimum coverage. Volunteers have the option to meet those working in their section at approximately 8.45am, before starting. (Upon registering for this event, we will inform you of your area.) In this way, families, youth groups, churches and interest groups can work together in the same geographical area. It is suggested that teenagers/youth groups work in teams, standing in pairs, and even rotating jobs over the course of the morning.

Depending upon enthusiasm and time, volunteers may use other means to heighten the awareness of the petition and gain signatures. This may involve door knocking for signatures, parking your car (nearby) with signs on the window, or any other appropriate options. It’s all up to you!

Unity For Liberty hopes that as local residents go about their daily business, they will be confronted by a succession of clear messages and pleasant people. The impact of this event should be the talking point for at least 80% of all the homes in the area. For example- 300 people spaced at 1 km apart. The campaign will cover 300 kms over the Howick/Pakuranga area.

In order to coordinate a successful campaign in this area, we will need an indication of numbers. If you intend to join in this event, please let us know so we can allocate people to different areas. We intend to overload areas so no one will be isolated.

Group registrations are accepted and members will be placed together throughout the morning.

All activity involving Unity For Liberty is of a peaceful nature; any illegal or irresponsible actions will not be tolerated.

Some Helpful Guidelines:
In any case of confrontation, remember you are a pedestrian “walk away”.
If any responses are to be given, “we oppose child abuse and sign the 2nd question”.
Do not be an obstruction to the general public.
Do not enter commercial business areas. There are by-laws in place that would be infringed.

To publicly voice our frustration at the Government's arrogant disdain of the ordinary New Zealander evidenced in the passing of the Crimes (Abolition of Force as a Justification for Child Discipline) Amendment Bill.
